What keeps you motivated? My family and my derby friends.
How do you prepare yourself for a game? Listening to music and meditating.
What’s your biggest derby goal this year? To get more fit so I can be there 100% for my team.
How long have you been in the sport? This is my second season with Five 40 Roller Girls.
What got you in to derby? I saw a bout in Whidbey Island, WA. The Whidbey Island Roller Girls played against another team, I don’t recall who it was, but they were phenomenal! The game was fast paced, and thrilling the whole time. At the end, both teams were smiling and laughing and hugging. The comradery between the two teams made the game even better. You could tell just by watching, even someone so clueless to the sport as myself, that both teams worked hard, worked together, and even though there was a definite winner and loser, they all had a great time playing. That sealed the deal for me.
Best derby moment for you so far? Last weekend at our bout against the Charlottesville Derby Dames’ Belmont Bruisers we were short jammers. I was picked to be one of the relief jammers. One day, I’d love to be an actual jammer. But I need to improve my juking and endurance first. Anyhow, when it was my turn to go in, I got through the pack and got lead. It was thrilling!
Give us 5 words your team would use to describe you. Kind, works hard, doesn’t quit
Now give us 5 you’d use to describe them. Caring, encouraging, teamwork, teaches, learns
If you could play with another team for a game who would you pick? Why? Whidbey Island Roller Girls. They got me interested in playing derby, they are an amazing team, and they have great sportsmanship. Who’s the most challenging Jammer / Blocker you’ve faced. That’s a challenging question. I am still new to the sport, and haven’t played in many bouts yet. There was this blocker team, The Bash Sisters. I swear they were in every wall I was in. Those two were unstoppable!
What keeps you motivated? That’s a hard one. It is easy to get derby burnout. Especially if I am having a hard time grasping a new skill when the rest of the girls have mastered it easily. What keeps me coming back to practice and trying harder each time is my teammates. I have a group of friends within the team that we are close knit and motivate each other to keep coming, to keep trying. Encouraging each other and uplifting each other. It makes a huge difference having them on the team with me.
How do you prepare yourself for a game? I like to make myself as zen as possible. Clear my head and think of ways that I am good at keeping the jammer back. I also check and recheck my gear bag a dozen times, too. I would hate to get to the bout and be missing a piece of gear!
What’s your biggest derby goal this year? Shutter stepping. Need I say more?? I sprained my ankle about a month ago and it still hurts. Shutter stepping is not my friend.
What does derby need that’s maybe it’s lacking today? It would be great if we could have more coverage. Go a little more mainstream as far as sports go. To almost legitimize our sport on a level that basketball and baseball are on. However, being on the fringe has its benefits, too. Maybe that is what the draw is to the sport.
